History of Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) 1. Background (Before 1947) Before independence in 1947, the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir was ruled by Maharaja Hari Singh. The state was majority Muslim but ruled by a Hindu king. 2. Accession to India (October 1947) After Pakistan-backed tribal invasion in October 1947, the Maharaja signed the Instrument of Accession with India. First Indo-Pak War (1947–1948) Pakistan sent regular troops to support the tribal invasion. War broke out between India and Pakistan. In 1949, a ceasefire was brokered by the United Nations, and the region was divided: India retained about two-thirds of the territory (Jammu, Kashmir Valley, Ladakh).
