 History of Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK)

1. Background (Before 1947)

Before independence in 1947, the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir was ruled by Maharaja Hari Singh.

The state was majority Muslim but ruled by a Hindu king.

2. Accession to India (October 1947)

After Pakistan-backed tribal invasion in October 1947, the Maharaja signed the Instrument of Accession with India.

This allowed Indian troops to defend the territory against invaders.

3. First Indo-Pak War (1947–1948)

Pakistan sent regular troops to support the tribal invasion.

War broke out between India and Pakistan.

In 1949, a ceasefire was brokered by the United Nations, and the region was divided:

India retained about two-thirds of the territory (Jammu, Kashmir Valley, Ladakh).

Pakistan occupied one-third, known today as Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), including Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan.

PoK is divided into:

Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK): Self-governing under Pakistan’s control.

Gilgit-Baltistan: Previously called Northern Areas, directly controlled by Pakistan.

5. India's Position

India considers the entire region of Jammu & Kashmir, including PoK, as its integral part.

The Indian Parliament passed a resolution in 1994, stating that PoK is an inseparable part of India.

6. Recent Developments

In 2019, after the abrogation of Article 370, India reaffirmed its claim over PoK more strongly.

There are ongoing diplomatic protests against Pakistan’s activities in PoK, including CPEC (China-Pakistan Economic Corridor).
